Hi Team Ward Parents,

It is hard to believe it's the end of January!  Even though we had several short weeks in January due to cold weather, we have been extremely busy in first grade.  Here is an overview of things we've been doing:

Nonfiction Features - We are learning a lot about nonfiction features during reading workshop and writer's workshop.  These include table of contents, index, glossary, photographs, captions, labels, maps, and more!  Soon Team Ward will start an animal research project so each student can "publish" a book that includes some of these features.

Needs and Wants - In social studies, we studied the differences between families' needs and wants.  We took a field trip to the Raupp Museum.  Thank you to Mrs. Kelly, Mrs. Poretto, Mrs. Glickson, and Mr. Dick for volunteering for this trip.  The students learned a little bit about how families lived on farms and used milk and eggs to trade for goods and services.

Measurement - In math, we started Chapter 9 on measurement.  We've learned about how to use objects to measure the length of various objects.  We have focused on vocabulary such as shorter, shortest, longer, longest, taller, tallest, and units, as well as the importance of using a start line.

A big thank you to the room parents and other parent volunteers who helped make our winter holiday party a success.  I have posted a few photos from that event and others on the photo page of our site.

Please have your child continue to practice spelling words at home - both reading and writing them.  In addition, it would be great to practice math on IXL at home.  Just a few minutes a day can make a difference!

Remember that we have library on Mondays.  Please remind your child to bring his/her library books back to school on Monday so they can check out new books!

Lastly, children will go out for recess most days (as long as the windchill is above 0 degrees).  Please send your child to school with the appropriate gear everyday so they can enjoy their time outside!  Thanks so much!

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  Enjoy your week:-)
