Welcome again to Mrs. Ward’s First Grade Class! We called ourselves TEAM WARD! We have a GREAT group of learners and we’re getting to know each other so that we can be a great team. We have 21 students in our class and they are all very eager to learn. Please know that if your child seems more tired than usual, this is completely normal. They are adjusting to a new environment and a full day of learning activities. Please continue to send your child with a water bottle during these hot days.
I am hoping to see you all at Curriculum Night next week! It is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 9th. Please plan to come to the gym at 7 p.m. because we are changing our presentation a bit this year. All first grade teachers will present together at 7:00 in the gym to give parents an overview of the curriculum, routines, and procedures. Then parents can come to classrooms for a very brief information session and to sign up for volunteer opportunities. If you won't be able to come, please let me know ahead of time and I will send home a packet of materials.
TEAM Ward was very busy during the first seven days of school! We learned new poems, practiced handwriting, played games to get to know each other, started the first chapter in our math curriculum, and learned about reading strategies. Our read-alouds included Splat the Cat and First Day Jitters. We also started our Kevin Henkes author study by reading Chrysanthemum, Lily’s Purple Plastic Purse, and Wemberly Worried.
We wrote two different books together, each child contributing a page (or two!) to each book. These will soon be in our classroom library! Team Ward and Team Kahn (Mrs. Kahn’s first grade class) got together for several lessons and team-building activities. Mrs. Kahn and I will be working closely together this year, often planning and teaching our lessons together. We’re glad the students are already getting to know each other!
This year we are also very lucky to have Mrs. Schaper, our teacher associate, helping in our room. She is in our classroom for about one hour everyday, and she helps in the lunchroom and at recess.
If you have not done so already, please remember to bring in the following by next week:
-Art Smock (oversized t-shirt to keep in the locker)
-Parent Form on blue paper (If you need another copy, let me know.)
-Coins for math (4 quarters, 10 dimes, 10 nickels, 20 pennies)
-Headphones to keep at school
Please feel free to contact me if you ever have any questions or concerns. The best way to reach me is usually through email. My email address is [email protected]. You can also reach me at school at (847) 945-6665. Please leave a message on my voicemail if it’s not an urgent matter.
Thanks and enjoy the long weekend!!
